What is a Healing Circle?

The Healing Circle concept comes from an ancient archetype dating back to the beginning of time, used by many cultures.
The circle is used as a symbolic reference for: time; balance; wholeness; commitment; on-going life
journeys; and completion.
Today, a circle and the ideas associated with this symbol, continue to be a powerful image selected for healing, prayer, problem solving, and ultimately...for never ending personal and professional growth.

Circle Details
Although one form of prayer is NOT the focus of the Harlan Circle (so HC can provide an equal footing for all who seek positive change in their life); a healing circle, generally, is a group of people that come together in a state of prayer forming a circle to focus on a common healing goal or topic of interest.
The Harlan Circle focuses more on an individual's and group's mission to: overcome any obstacle, pain or loss; be free to share in a safe and accepting environment; learn the power of healthy communication; further create your identity; protect yourself without isolation; be encouraged to define and build success in your life; establish your personal and professional goals; achieving and maintaining your goals; and learn how to ground your strengths as an individual, friend, partner, family member, and professional.
Today, a healing circle can begin with as few as two people and a facilitator; with or without any form of traditional prayer; in a formal or informal setting. Circles can be offered anywhere that people are motivated to meet, from remote locations to conference rooms. For example a support group held at the local VFW, a discussion group held at the local coffee shop and a powwow at the office are all considered to be forms of circles. It has been noted that although some formats may produce greater results, each circle is created around the focus of the group and can be ongoing and evolve, or close upon the completion of the member's goals.
The circle formation creates an atmosphere in which everyone can be accepted as an equal and is encouraged to share and thrive at a pace that is right for each individual, based on the goals set by the group and its facilitator.

A facilitator opens the circle to current and new members; introduces the structure and rules of a circle; helps the members of the circle focus on the purpose of the healing through conversation and various mental and physical exercises; keeps the flow of the circle moving forward; redirects members back to their short and long-term goals set by each individual and the group; and sums up and closes the circle each time the circle meets.
Discussions, mental and physical exercises, creative design, breathing, visualization, meditation, movement, holding of hands, all may be utilized in the circle.
Circle structure and activities are developed by the facilitator, based on the needs of the group as a whole, making changes as the needs of the group evolve
and change.

Healing Circles can cover a variety of topics that may include: personal purpose; life transitions; communication; dreams; identity transformation; parenting; family; improved mental and physical health; sexuality; feelings of depression, loss, guilt, resentment, jealousy, love, passion, anxiety, anger; fears and
insecurities; management and change of unfulfilling work or relationships; compulsive behaviors; abuse; addictive behaviors; productivity; women’s
empowerment; goal setting and organization.
No two circles are ever exactly alike, due to the individual needs of any given group and the members that participate in the group.
There is a true and unique power in group energy as each member contributes to the process of healing as a whole. The main purpose of a Healing Circle is to bring the power together into one accepting non judgmental safe space to help heal and learn how to STOP settling or coping your way through life, love and work.

Circle Confidentiality Creates A Strong Core

All information shared within a healing circle is confidential, since privacy is a circle rule that cannot be compromised.
It's agreed, by all members, that…
What anyone says in a circle, stays in the circle.
Confidentiality in a group brings members closer; promotes equality; and creates a secure environment. This environment provides consistent opportunities to: build trust; gain respect; nurture and empower yourself and others to make positive change happen within a stable loving structure.
Designing strong clear circle structures, in which anyone can open up, share and explore their feelings with the facilitator and the group, is very important and can often dictate the lifespan of a healing circle.
The methods and behaviors learned within a group will naturally flow over into other areas of your life, into other groups and over into relationships outside of the circle. Applying what you have learned to every aspect of your life is encouraged and is a wonderful and often life changing result of a successful circle.
Circles and their facilitators help women, children, men, family, companies and groups stretch their perspectives, accept new truths and act on their visions for a healthier, productive and happier life.
